Embrace the latest trend – Waistcoats!!

Waistcoats (aka vests) are huge this season, and they seem to be here for a few more seasons to come!

And oh, this is one trend I am beyond excited to see come around again. I loved the humble waistcoat back in the 90’s. So, so good!! Long ones, short ones and in-between ones.

Commercial sewing patterns are drafted to fit a standard size, and really – what is a  a standard size?? When you spend hours making a top, dress or pants, you want them to fit you well, and sometimes making them in your size straight from the pattern envelope doesn’t quite cut the mustard.

Come and spend a few Saturdays with me, and learn how to draft your own Basic Bodice Block.

NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE in pattern drafting is required. You will learn how to take your measurements, and turn these into a block pattern.

The first day is focused on a Basic Bodice Block (Winifred Aldrich calls this one either  Close Fitting Bodice Block or Easy Fitting Bodice Block ), made to your exact measurements. You will make a muslin (aka fugly) out of calico (time permitting, homework may be required), make any minor adjustments if necessary to start the journey on getting a well fitted bodice block pattern. This block will then be tweaked slightly to become a Sleeveless Block Pattern.

Then we’ll look at some simple designs to show you how truly remarkable pattern drafting can be. Something that fits you and only you!!

And once all that tweaking is done, have I mentioned fabulous FIT. Every time!

Now  we can start our basic pattern drafting. First we’ll cover techniques like dart transfer, removing waist shaping for more ease, adding pleats or gathers for eg (you may not want this in a waistcoat but it will be useful for future drafting). Then we’ll draft a pattern for a waistcoat using some of these techniques. Easy stuff to start out your pattern drafting journey, and then as you gain confidence you will be able to make anything your heart desires.

And once your pattern is ready, we’ll work on sewing it up! Sewing your very own, self drafted pattern!

It really is totally within your grasp to create your own patterns!!

NB: Minimum age requirement is 18

Disclaimer: Because Sewsters all work at different speeds, some homework may be required. There is no pressure to work faster or at the same speed as everyone else. And because of this, I can not guarantee a finished waistcoat by the end of the workshop, but you will have enough knowledge to continue your journey.
